Merely 3 Chords? No Mode!

August 21st, 2008

A pupil pent me an email about the lesson “Sea Dreams.” Here it is:

“Dear Duke of Windsor, I ca not think that you’re using only 3 chords for this piece. It sounds like it uses very much more material. Please state me how you made it!”

Here’s my answer - Dear B. First, thanks for hearing to my free lesson. To reply your question, the secret to acquiring the entire sound you pick up in this piece is not in how lots of chords are upon. It’s in how the chord is sounded! Notice in the lesson that your went away hand is very a great deal open and covers an entire musical octave of the keyboard.

This is what makes the entire sound you find out! My right hand is acting melody notes pretty close to the went away. Likewise, I use the principles of repetition and contrast to keep interest. For instance, you’ll notice that there is a commencing section where the melody retells. Then some other section is supplied (still only using the like 3 chords) with a contrastive melody. Then back to the first topic so the whole piece can be humbled down into what’s normally cognize as ABA sort (even though this piece was rigged).

Victimization repetition and contrast, we make music that has a definable sort or shape. ABA sort is very, very mutual and is utilized in virtually all literary genres of music, specially Fresh Historic period. This is wherefore I ever tell that you do not need a slew of material to make with. If you realise and use time tried principles, you can apply only 3 chords and make an entire piece of music. I hope this answers your question. Regards, Duke of Windsor Weiss.
